A trip, a stumble or falling down a few stairs, not enough to seriously put you out, but enough to send a little shock wave through your system when you need it. Which is precisely what these things are intended for, a little shake up to alter your mind space to get you out of a habit or pattern of behaviour that has become dull and unproductive but hard to change.

The times when you might catch your own foot or trip over a crack in the concrete, can predominantly happen when you are too preoccupied with what other people might be thinking of you at that particular moment. Falling down a few stairs can occur when you need a little shake up to get you out of a mental rut.
